Astrophotography

Trevor Jones

My journey into amateur astrophotography began with a curiosity of the night sky. From the purchase of my first telescope to my first APOD (astronomy picture of the day); astronomy has enriched my life in ways I never thought possible.

When the weather is clear, you’ll find me under the stars in my backyard with my camera and telescope. The night sky offers endless photo opportunities of the celestial deep sky wonders within it.  My goal is to capture as many as possible and enjoy every step of the way.

AstroBackyard: An Astrophotography Blog

If you are looking to get started in astrophotography, you’re in luck. This website contains over 300 pages of astrophotography tips, tutorials, and image-processing techniques. I try to include a balance between information tutorials, informative reviews, and an overall journal of my adventures in astrophotography.

As astrophotography equipment continues to evolve, I refuse to remove myself from the equation – no matter how “automated” my setup becomes. What I mean is, I will always enjoy the process of capturing images of space outside. It’s probably my favorite part.

If you share my passion for astrophotography, you will likely relate to many of my experiences, past, and present. If you are new to this hobby, I implore you to first browse the image gallery for an idea of what you can expect to capture from home. The image processing details of each photo are always shared so that you will have an idea of how to approach each deep-sky target.

Beginners may find it most useful to start with the AstroBackyard YouTube Channel, as there are many hands-on tutorials and walkthroughs in video format available. I enjoy shooting these videos when I have something exciting to share, whether that’s a new piece of equipment or image processing technique.

If you are a passionate sky-watcher like myself and find yourself “looking up”, the moment you walk out your front door then this blog is for you. If you need me, I’ll be in the backyard. Clear skies.
